I became interested in postural alignment while working as a High Ropes Course Facilitator. If you don’t know what that is, imagine yourself in a parachute harness with ropes tied to you and jumping off a very high telephone poll. It’s quite fun actually and can be an incredible teacher of how to turn stress into excitement.

As a participant, you spend a lot of time hanging above the ground and on top of telephone poles. As a facilitator, that means a lot of time looking up. After hours of tilting my head back, my low back and neck quickly progressed from ache to pain.

After all the movement work I had studied and regularly participated in, I was baffled why I hurt. Also, a bit chagrined. I began to notice how I distorted my body in order to perform my job. My postural twists and turns were creating pain.

Once I began teaching postural alignment processes I am awed at the amount of people who are silently suffering from chronic pain. After class, I was often approached by people who tolerated mild to immense levels of pain on a daily basis. I am deeply impressed with the power of alignment to address issues from improved athletic performance to decreasing or eliminating debilitating pain. After beginning postural alignment work my back and neck returned to being pain free. An added bonus was resolving a seven year old knee injury. I am enjoying jogging, hiking and backpacking that had, at one time, brought me more pain than pleasure.
