Normal But Not Natural
The descent into chronic pain is often slow and quiet. There is always so much to do, and the pressures of survival are so strong that we often ignore our body’s signals. A little backache is a small price to pay for staying afloat, right? Well, maybe not.
The American Medical Association reports that 80% of all Americans will have at least one debilitating back injury. Next to the common cold, back pain is the leading cause of lost work days – over 80 million of them annually.
Some of us have been in pain for so long that we have come to think of it as normal.
It’s easier for us to cope with our discomfort than to do something about it. When we think we’ve tried everything and nothing has really worked, we get discouraged. We begin making compromises in our daily lives.
Do any of these scenarios sound familiar?
- Do you take the elevator rather than the stairs because your knees or ankles ache?
- Do you avoid putting grocery bags on the floor because you’re not sure you can pick them up without hurting yourself?
- Do you modify your workout because you know that there will be a high price to pay later?
How many times this week have you avoided a movement or activity because you’re worried about the consequences?
If the answer is more than once, your activities are probably being dictated more by fear than by desire and joy.
