Do you thrive in one-on-one sessions where the focus is on you getting what you need?
An individual session is the most direct way to find out the cause of your pain and to receive a customized program.
Is there a program that can work for you that doesn’t cause pain and is really doable?
Often the one size fits all approach doesn’t fit anyone very well. You’ll get a few hits, but there are enough misses that you lose interest and start looking for something that is a better match to your needs.
It’s frustrating to try things that don’t work or that you need to modify so much for your circumstances that it isn’t effective or fun anymore. Or worse, you hurt yourself.
The tried, but not so true.
When you don’t know what is causing your pain, it’s difficult to know what will and won’t work for you. It’s always trial and error. The error part gets very tiring, very quickly.
You know there are things you can do to help yourself, but there are almost too many options. It’s confusing trying to figure it out on your own. So many people have told you to try different things that it gets overwhelming. You end up doing nothing because it feels like the safest thing to do.
For most of us, being inactive trumps pain.
The problem with that is the old adage of “use it or lose it” is true when it comes to the muscles in the body. Our muscles will atrophy if we don’t use them. Everything about our bodies is designed for movement. Becoming inactive as a pain management strategy can end in disaster and regret.
My approach works with your body and goals. The path to achieving activity goals is different for people who are in pain.
There are two things you need to do to reach your goals:
Get out of pain.
This may seem obvious. But the tolerance for pain in most people is very high, especially if it’s chronic pain. We get to know it, learn to live with it and then ignore it.
Many people are willing to endure even more pain to get out of pain. Sometimes that works, but a lot of time it doesn’t.
Focusing on pain reduction first will prepare your body for more active exercises.
Gradually become more active while remaining pain free.
Once you’re pain free it’s time to start asking your body to move in a way that cultivates health. Most of us have been practicing our movement habits for a long time slowly creating muscle imbalances which can eventually result in pain.
A consistent program to wake up sleeping muscles and reduce the burden on overworked muscles helps to bring balance to years of misalignment.
When you are both pain free and active you have better health and can begin to turn your goals into reality.
When we work together we focus on your alignment plus your activity goals. It is possible to address both at the same time.
A simple, daily practice of straightening and strengthening posture muscles restores the function of your body.
Bodies are adaptable and will respond just as easily to bad stimulus as to good. Exercises that target the muscle groups which support your function will foster ease of movement throughout the day.
Many of the exercises at Pain Free First are relaxing and enjoyable while some are challenging. Varying the demand in both exertion and muscle groups allows the entire body to function in a more coordinated and effortless way.
You don’t need any fancy or expensive equipment.
The exercises are simple to do and matched to your fitness and discomfort level. Where props are needed there are household items, such as a pillow or book, which will do the job. Each routine comes with handouts which includes a photo of the exercise plus detailed instructions on how to do it.
The routines are also matched to your movement abilities. Maybe getting off the floor is more trouble than its worth. With over 500 exercises to choose from it is easy to find ones that will work for you while still being effective.
Plus, you’re in control.
There is no hands-on manipulation of your body as in chiropractic adjustments or massage therapy. Your feedback while doing the exercises helps me to know if it’s the right exercise for you. Your awareness of your body will greatly increase. This lets you know how you’re improving.
Routines can be created to complement your lifestyle.
Not only are the exercises adaptable, but the types of routines are as well.
There is no reason to stop your current activities if they don’t cause pain. Pre and post workout exercises, and splitting a routine between morning and evening are ways to add something to your life without huge interruption.
Twenty to sixty minutes a day, depending on your commitment, is enough to lead your body back into alignment and away from pain-causing movement patterns. As we work together your daily routine changes with each re-assessment to continue your progress.
Although results of reduced pain, better balance, more flexibility and feeling taller can be felt very quickly it takes time for the body to heal and naturally move into proper alignment.
Sessions are generally 14 days apart to allow your body to respond to new exercises. After your initial 90 minute session, each session is 60-75 minutes.

How it works:
- Your first session starts with a conversation about your situation and what you would like to get out of working together. This allows us to structure our sessions to meet your goals. Subsequent sessions start with a check in of progress.
- Wearing workout gear or other comfortable clothing, a digital photo of the front, back, left and right sides of your body are taken. This gives us great information about how your body deviates from optimal alignment. The photos also serve as our starting point for comparison in subsequent sessions. We will take photos at each session to help guide your progression.
- Several simple exercises will reveal how your body responds to movement.
- With the information you provide, in addition to the digital photos and movement exercises, it is enough to create the initial routine of therapeutic exercises. Unlike many other kinds of approaches, these are the only kinds of assessment procedures I use. Because the focus is on alignment of the joints in the body I don’t diagnose any specific problem.
- You will practice each exercise to understand how to do it and ask any questions.
- You will receive a list of your exercises, the order in which to do them and the amount of time or repetitions to perform each exercise. Additionally, handouts detailing each exercise, including a photo, will be included.
- Take it home and do it daily!
